A little about our town Packenham: The township of Pakenham is a satellite suburb of Melbourne, situated in the Cardinia Shire. The town has a population of approximately 34,000 residents, and because of new housing estates being built with an increasing population, Pakenham is actually considered a regional suburb of Melbourne.
The old Latrobe Inn, later called Bourke’s Hotel, and later still The Highway Hotel, is still standing on the corner of Toomuc Valley Road and the Princess Highway. This hotel has been in continuous practice since 1848, when a Michael Bourke took up a hotel licence in the Westernport district.
On the day of the 1851 Black Thursday bushfires, the temperature had reached 47˚C, with the hot northerly winds making breathing almost impossible. Not long after the Bourke’s had taken up residence in the hotel, only Catherine Bourke and her small children were at the premises, with husband Michael away at their station property up the road. He was busy fighting the fires at the property with water, and later with fresh milk from his dairy (after his water supply had run out); when he heard the fires had encircled his hotel.
He discovered his wife and children crouching in the almost dry Toomuc Creek to escape the flames, but fortunately all survived along with the hotel and station. The Bourke family went on to establish themselves in the Pakenham area.
The original names for the Pakenham region were Mt Pleasant or Minton’s Creek. Thomas Minton bought a lease of land in 1840 for an amount of 1,619 Pounds and named it Mt Pleasant, and when Minton died, his brother took over the lease and made a further addition to it by purchasing the Mt Ararat run. Actually, the entire township of Pakenham today is where the Mt Pleasant lease was in 1843.
By 1859, Pakenham had a Post Office and some sort of regular mail service. Travellers on their way to Gippsland would take a coach to Dandenong, then on to Berwick by dray. An improvement in roads by 1874 saw a Cobb & Co coach service providing transport from Melbourne through Pakenham and further.
A railway station was built approximately 3.5 kilometres from the township, and by 1877, the majority of the town moved towards the rail station. This in turn, caused confusion as two settlements emerged with two post offices. This has been recorded with ‘old Pakenham’ being close to Toomuc Creek, and the ‘new Pakenham’ near the railway station.
